Mr. David Hillier is a highly skilled surgeon specialising in hip and knee arthroplasty (joint replacement) and complex musculoskeletal trauma, at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Spire Liverpool Hospital. His expertise lies in complex primary and revision surgeries, with a specific focus on managing infected joint replacements. The breadth of his knowledge and experience enables him to effectively handle an array of cases, from straightforward to intricate, always exhibiting empathy and care for his patients throughout their treatment journey.

Career to date

Mr Hillier grew up and was educated in North Shropshire before heading to Keele University, Staffordshire to study Physiotherapy in 2000. in 2003, he gained a 2:1 with Honors and admission to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and registration with the Health Professions Council, now the HCPC. After graduation, he worked at the South Cheshire Private Hospital, Crewe as a Senior Physiotherapist. This background gave him the ideal start to his medical career, affording him an early opportunity to experience the patient journey from a different perspective to you average surgeon.

Mr Hillier developed his love of Orthopaedics gained during his Physiotherapy training by gaining a place at the prestigious Manchester University Medical School, study back at his adopted home at Keele University. He gained his Batchelor of Medicine, Batchelor of Surgery (MBChB) in 2008.

Mr Hillier started his medical career in Stoke on Trent, University Hospitals of North Midlands completing his Foundation and Core Surgical Training in the West Midlands Deanery (Oswestry & Stoke Rotation). His higher surgical training was completed as a Specialist Registrar, working in the Mersey Deanery. During his time working around Liverpool and Cheshire, he developed a broad range of skills and knowledge in the generality of Trauma and Orthopaedics. He was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS Tr & Ortho) in 2019 before completing his higher surgical training in 2021.

Fellowship

Cavendish Fellow, Sheffield 2021-22

In 2021, Mr Hillier undertook his advanced specialist training in Revision Hip and Knee Arthroplasty having been successfully appointed a position at Sheffield Teaching hospitals, on the highly competitive an Internationally recognised Cavendish Fellowship. During his time in Sheffield, Mr Hillier was exposed to some of the most complex surgical conditions, particularly infection in patients who were referred from all across the UK to be treated by the team in the Lower Limb Arthroplasty Unit (LLAU) in Sheffield.

Mr Hillier presented his fellowship research work at the British Hip Society (BHS) annual scientific meeting in Brighton. This worked correlated the newly published revision hip complexity classification (RHCC) from the British Hip Society (BHS) with the true costs of treating such complex cases in specialised tertiary referral centres.

Combining work with fun..... Motorsport

Mr Hillier has found a way to combine his love of motorsport with work. As a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at Oulton Park and Doctor at Silverstone Race Circuits, he manages to utilise his complex trauma skills and experience whilst also enjoying high octane motorsport action from the budding amateur through to Professionals like Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso and Mark Weber at the Silverstone F1 Grand Prix and World Endurance Championships (WEC).
